JWOF ANNUAL VISIT TO MELODY HOUSE
Fifteen members of the Jamaican Women of Florida (JWOF) organization made their annual trip to Jamaica on January 17, 2020, to spend quality time and have some fun with their “nieces” at Melody House in Irwin, Montego Bay.
The group was the largest to visit since its inception six years ago. We had a full itinerary planned for our brief visit on the island. Arriving in Montego Bay on January 17, most of the group were transported by Wright Choice Tours to our temporary home away from home, Point of View Villa and Spa, nestled in the hills overlooking Montego Bay. After a good night’s rest and a delicious breakfast, we were ready to embark on the primary purpose of our trip to spend the day with the girls and house mothers of Melody House.
We arrived at Melody House, a home for neglected and abused girls, on Saturday morning, January 18. We, the “aunties” were greeted with bright smiles and hugs. Introductions to new and returning aunties sharing the gift bags of clothing, toiletries, many matey bags, and greetings from “aunties” in Florida started the bonding. Included among our gifts was a computer and books to help facilitate communication for our newly formed virtual book club. The girls were eagerly looking forward to our day ahead, fun, and adventure at Puerto Seco Beach in Discovery Bay. But, first, we were treated to a tour of the home and the newly renovated chicken-coop filled with Broilers and Layers, a donation from Food For The Poor, one of JWOF’s many partners. It was rewarding to learn how these girls have created a new source of income for the home as they proudly sell eggs to the surrounding community.
It was time to head out for our fun-filled day at the beach fourteen girls, fifteen JWOFers, and two house mothers were safely transported by Wright Choice Tours. On the way, we made an unplanned stop at historic Columbus Park in Discovery Bay. It was a joy to spend this time with these appreciative girls who rarely are afforded an outing to the beach. They expended so much energy in the water we were happy that we had a large buffet lunch to feast on. Upon returning to the home in the early evening, we spent a little more time learning about our “nieces” lives, aspirations, and ways we can continue to offer support. We said our farewells after two of the girls sang melodious solos, which touched our emotions.
After completing the primary purpose of the trip, visiting with the “nieces,” we the “aunties” took time for ourselves, on Sunday, January 19, to explore some sights. We spent the day in St. Elizabeth, lounging in the sea at Pelican Bar, touring Black River Swamp Safari, and eating scrumptious seafood at Little Ochi. It was a short, enjoyable, and educational trip that we are glad we made. Meeting the girls in person, learning about their individual stories and talents, gives us the impetus to develop more ways to support them as much as our organization can. - Dawn Wilson-Roberts
