JWOF College Planning Workshop: Preparing the Next Generation for Success
On October 5th, the Jamaican Women of Florida (JWOF) hosted an insightful College Planning Workshop at the South Regional Library, leaving both students and parents feeling more prepared for the journey ahead. The event proved to be an invaluable resource for college-bound families eager to navigate the often-daunting college application process.
The workshop brought together dynamic organizations and educational experts, all dedicated to equipping students with the tools not only to enter college but to thrive once there. The panel included Dr. Patricia Bloodworth, St Thomas University; Karja Cope, The Cope Center; Faiza Charles, Bank of America; hosted by High School Student, Jayla Clement.
From uncovering the latest updates on the college application process to discovering untapped financial aid resources, attendees left armed with the knowledge needed to succeed. This segment was presented by Dora George, Miami Dade College.
One of the standout sessions was the Essay Writing Sprint by JWOF Member Nerissa Street. In it, students made real progress on their scholarship and entrance essays and received expert guidance on writing compelling narratives that truly stood out.
In addition to the valuable workshops, JWOF highlighted their $5,000 scholarship and Shedly Parnther from Scholarship Plug provided a wealth of information on other scholarship opportunities available to students. Families were encouraged to explore these financial resources to help make college more accessible.
The event was generously sponsored by the Children’s Services Council, Broward County Library, and Publix, whose support helped make the workshop a success.
The JWOF College Planning Workshop left families feeling confident and well-equipped with strategies to achieve their educational goals. This event embodied JWOF’s ongoing commitment to supporting the next generation in pursuing higher education and building a strong foundation for future success.
