Jamaican Women of Florida Lend a Hand to Hurricane Beryl Relief Efforts

The winds of Hurricane Beryl may have died down, but the Jamaican diaspora in Florida is just getting started with their relief efforts.

Beryl, the second named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, tore through parts of Jamaica, leaving a trail of destruction. Homes were damaged, roofs ripped off, and communities left without basic necessities.

Knowing the urgency of the situation, the Jamaican Women of Florida (JWOF) sprang into action. To jumpstart the relief efforts, JWOF held a successful Hurricane Beryl Donation Drive last Friday, July 5 at John E Mullins Park in Lauderhill. The drive collected a significant amount of canned goods, non-perishable items, and care kits.

Additionally, members dedicated their time at the Global Empowerment Mission (GEM), a non-profit organization known for its disaster relief efforts, to meticulously pack boxes filled with essential items. From non-perishable food and water to hygiene products and cleaning supplies, each box represented a message of hope and solidarity from their Florida home to their island nation. Hurricane relief is a long-term effort. While the initial response is vital, the rebuilding process needs ongoing support.
