Karen Coutrier - 2020 Health & Wellness Panelist

Dr. Karen Coutrier has over 34 years of experience in the healthcare sector and her nursing career has encompassed various specialty departments as staff and nurse manager at various hospitals on Long Island and as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She worked on a mobile medical unit for 14 years at Montefiore Medical Center, providing health care to homeless adolescent, incarcerated youth, women, and children throughout the five boroughs. Dr. Coutrier has also participated in global healthcare initiatives and outreach in Ghana, Santo Domingo, Jamaica, Guam, and Haiti. 

She also developed programs in the clinic and the community both in the United States and internationally that enhanced health promotion and wellness for the diverse population that she served. Dr. Coutrier has over 15 years’ experience at the Long Island Educational Opportunity Center, which is part of the University Center for Academic and Workforce Development (UCAWD) and The State University of New York (SUNY). 

She has engaged in various administrative roles before returning to full time faculty four years ago and is presently the Department Chairperson for Allied Health. One of the primary resources of UCAWD is to promote and provide quality educational opportunities for the under-served and under-educated residents of New York. 

Dr. Coutrier has developed curriculum that has enhanced the Allied Health Department at the Long Island Educational Opportunity Center. Her combined experience in the workforce and educational sector has allowed her to be and innovative, visual and oriented leader with over 34 years of experience in the educational and private sectors managing multi-level diverse departmental entities. Her comprehensive knowledge and her ability to serve a high need, cultural and linguistically diverse adult community has created a supportive learning environment for her patients and students. Dr. Coutrier has outstanding technology skills complemented with management informational system experience which she has utilized to support the learning environment for her students and her patients. She also takes the time to mentor students, nurses and faculty to advance to higher educational and healthcare administrative positions.
